Robert Kajiwara (also known as Rob Kajiwara) is an Okinawan rock and pop singer-songwriter based in Okinawa City. His style is inspired by the Beatles, Elton John, and Motown. Often blending American, British, and world sounds, he is influenced by traditional Okinawan folk and Hawaiian country styles. Born in San Francisco, raised in Hawaii, Seattle, and Okinawa, Kajiwara has a multicultural, multiethnic background, being both Okinawan, Nahua (Native Mexican), and a Hawaiian Kingdom national. Kajiwara is founder and president of the Peace For Okinawa Coalition, and his petition to save Okinawa's coral reef has over 212,000 signatures. He has represented Okinawans at the United Nations, Washington DC, Yale University, University of the Ryukyus, and elsewhere, promoting Indigenous rights of the Asia-Pacific. Petition to save Henoko, Okinawa
Kajiwara has been an outspoken advocate for both Native Ryukyuan and Native Hawaiian rights. On December 8, 2018 he started a petition calling for a halt to the construction work of a new military base at Henoko, Okinawa. The petition quickly garnered international attention, amassing over 100,000 signatures within just 10 days, and currently has over 212,000 signatures, including from many notable celebrities.
